Hark, the angels are singing, it’s Christmas time invite everyone, even Harold. Glory to the newborn King! At Christmas time each one of us can relax and reflect over the past year.
As we reflect over the past year, perhaps one of the worst in recent memory, it is appropriate to have the right perspective. Many state and federal officials have commanded that we not gather and stay isolated this Christmas, adding a sad end to an already depressing year.
For those of you that didn’t already enjoy Christmas or those traditions that come with them, more specifically Christmas music, this year may not change much for you. Allow me a moment to explain why the tradition in Christmas music can help to make the holiday better. I will also reveal, quite correctly, the greatest Christmas song of all time and mention some of the worst.
Come, let us adore some of the greatest Christmas music. Once you realize that Christmas music is a must to set the mood and help bring the Christmas spirit. Let us explore some of the fantastic lyrics in some of the most traditional songs.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, or in this case sound like it, when Christmas songs first can be heard on the airways. I really appreciate the fact that we are told to have a merry little Christmas. Almost, as if, we can control how merry we may be and that outside circumstances shouldn’t affect it. We can muddle through some how. Next year will be as good as we choose to make it.
One may not be able to gather with family but when chestnuts roasting on an open fire can be heard it can make you wish you were. Most of all, I believe, it will help you appreciate family and friends and the traditions that were created. As with most things when you go without, it will help you appreciate what you don’t have and the loved ones we have lost along the way.
As I continue to beat this drum, ba rum bum bum bum, I hope to keep in time, with or without the help of the ox and lamb. I hope I have lost time and can sink into the past were we all enjoy Christmas much more. It almost requires us to have the innocence of a child to maximize the Christmas spirit. Now look to the future and beat to your own drum to make, to create a magical Christmas.
Where are you Christmas? Can we find it, I believe we can and it can be as magical as you want it to be with the help of great Christmas music. A blue Christmas can come to all of us, there will always be things to be sad or depressed about but I argue that Christmas is a time for joy. If for nothing else than to reflect on the miracle of a newborn child that came to us in human form to be a King and save humanity.
Finally, even Mary knew some of the greatest and worst Christmas songs. When Nat King Cole wrote “The Christmas Song” in the summer of 1937 it penned the greatest Christmas song of all time, with a close runner up being a “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby. An honorable mention is “Do you hear what I hear”- Whitney Houston.
Look out and keep your ears sharp to quickly change the station if you hear one of the following: “ War is Over”- John Lennon, “Celebrate me Home”- Kenny Loggins, “A Wonderful Christmas Time”- Paul McCartney. Worst of all if you hear this song it’s over and you can never unhear it and the horrible lyrics will haunt you for all time. It should be against the law to have such a horrible song plague the airwaves, it’s an abomination. “Same Old Lang Syne”- Dan Fogelberg any Christmas song that begins with “met my old lover in the grocery store” should be banned. That it was a true story does not help.
Now that I’ve left you will the carol of the bells so to speak, hopefully you can hear what I hear. Take heart and enjoy this Christmas with joy and love and above all BE MERRY.
